In the early 1970s, student nurses had to undergo 3 years of study which included both theoretical and practical coursework. The old uniform had epaulettes on their shoulders for teachers and students to identify those in their year. Students would first start off with a green stroke on their epaulettes, followed by blue and lastly a red stroke third year. When one graduates, a full nurse will be awarded a fully blue epaulette.
